RECREATURES

,, As we celebrate weird creatures, keep in mind that weirdness is relative. The ocean comprises more than 90% of the living space on Earth. Even though less than 1 % of the ocean has been explored, the ocean, especially the deep ocean, is more typical of our Earth than anywhere on land, such as a forest, a savannah, a city or a shopping mall. These weird creatures are arguably the typical, normal citizens of our planet - much more so than anything found on land."

Weird Sea Creatures, Erich Hoyt

Most people don't think about the bottom of the ocean. When you look at maps, the ocean is portrayed as flat blue with very few features. However, this couldn't be further from what the ocean looks like. Picture huge mountains, exotic hydrothermal bent forests, and features that seem otherworldly, supporting diverse life that is just as alien. The ocean covers 70% of the Earth's surface, yet there are still so many things we do not know about its topography or ecosystem. There is more life in the ocean than anywhere else on Earth. The water column is the largest yet least explored habitat, and is home to animals that captivate the imagination. As far down as three and a half miles, there are species of coral over 4,000 years old. Mineral-rich, superheated water create towering chimneys that can hold as much life per square meter as a tropical rainforest. It is believed that hydrothermal vents like these may be where life on Earth first began. There are predicted to be millions of unknown species whose contribution to ocean and human health is still unknown.

Recreature is an ongoing semi-fictional scientific exploration aimed at raising awareness of marine life and the impacts of human activity on ocean habitats. The ocean, as the birthplace of life
on Earth,
holds countless undiscovered species, with estimates suggesting up to 750,000
awaiting discovery.

As climate change accelerates, Earth‘s layers melt away to reveal creatures that once thrived here, evolving now to coexist with humans in unexpected ways. These adaptive species may ultimately

form symbiotic relationships with humans, finding habitat within the human body due to its high water content—an attractive feature, given water is their natural environment. A strong, spiked shell

typically protects their soft inner bodies, serving as armor and shield. Inspired by this concept,
the
Recreature series introduces solid silver “armour” pieces, redefining the boundaries of everyday

jewellery while hinting at resilience and adaptation.

* all pieces are drawn from deep waters—each one is unique and made to order
